Metin Yilmaz Quartet
The Metin Yilmaz Quartet is led by Metin Yilmaz, who plays the kaval and bilûr, the end-blown flutes of Anatolian and Kurdish music. The group combines traditional Anatolian and Kurdish tunes and its own pieces with jazz improvisation, with Matt McMahon on piano, Steve Elphick on double bass and Jodie Michael on drums. Yilmaz studied with leading kaval players in Turkey and spent about ten years working with musicians in Cologne before settling in Australia. Musica Viva has named the quartet as a featured act for its 2027 regional touring program.
